Position Summary

The landscape maintenance crew leader will perform tasks including directing and training his or her staff on planting, lawn mowing, trimming, weed pulling, leaf blowing and collecting, careful pruning. The job will include communicating with the Horticultural Manager on a daily basis, sometimes site basis. The crew leader will be responsible for training the crew truck driver, ensuring loading and unloading of the truck is done properly at the yard.

Key Responsibilities

  • Comply with Occupational Health & Safety Act regulations (see OHSA S. 27: Duties of Supervisor)
  • Responsible for ensuring all required PPE and safety equipment is used by crew members.
  • Train crew members (using OJT methodology) to improve worksite skill set (quality and efficiency improvements) and ensure all crew members are working at capacity.
  • Complete performance reviews with lead hand/driver and labourers
  • Complete worksite safety inspections and toolbox talks
  • Ability to drive a 5-ton or larger truck with trailer.
  • Ensure machines and material in trucks and on trailers are secured.
  • Review landscape maintenance sites to identify and eliminate potential hazards.
  • Control traffic passing near, in or around work zones.
  • Complete Daily Progress Reports and meetings on sites with horticultural manager
  • Load and unload gardening tools, machinery and distribute/return them to the appropriate location on crew truck.
  • Handle, install, fertilize, and water plant material.

Qualifications and Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid G-Class Driver’s License.
  • 3 years or more horticultural experience.
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills
  • Ability to train and lead a crew of 2 to 3 people

Working Conditions

This is a full-time, seasonal position with the opportunity for a non-seasonal position should it become available. Employees will be working outdoors in all types of weather. The workday starts at 7am on site and 6:30am at the yard. The hours will range from 45 to 55 per week, Monday to Friday and optional Saturdays. The company works to provide long weekends off for all employees.

This position requires a high level of personal organization and motivation, and social intelligence. It is highly physical in nature and requires the applicant to be able to lift weights of up to 50lbs and includes frequent repetitive tasks. It also requires the applicant to have experience driving trucks with trailers and operating excavators and skid steers.

Salary Range

Varies from $26 to $37 per hour depending on skill set and experience.
